Moore City Residents in Oklahoma Seek Legalization of Keeping Chickens in Backyards

Actually, sometime in 2022, the Moore City council had shot down a proposed ordinance to legalize backyard chickens in Moore homes for several reasons.

OK State veterinarian Dr. Rod Hall of the Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry warned that 11 Oklahomans who lived in homes with backyard chickens, became ill as a result of salmonella infection.

Inasmuch as the chickens kept by residents within the grounds of their respective residence do not undergo testing, Dr. Hall warned that it’s worrisome because there is no assurance that the chickens are not salmonella infected. There is great potential therefore that raising and keeping fowls in backyards can cause salmonella outbreaks.

Dr. Hall cites the report of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which stated that keeping chickens in backyards is primarily responsible for causing a nationwide spread of salmonella infections. The CDC report reveals that every year, approximately 1.35 million salmonella bacterial infections occur, which resulted in more than 26,500 hospitalizations and around 420 deaths.

Moore City Council Will Still Look Into the Matter

Factory Obscura Discusses with OK City Council about Offers to Buy or Lease Norman Property

Factory Obscura, a for-profit company met with the Oklahoma City Council to study the details of its proposal to buy or lease a row of offices in Norman City. The property located about 20 miles south of downtown Oklahoma is owned by OK City. It is currently being eyed by Factory Obscura as the new site for a forthcoming interactive art gallery.

During the session last Tuesday, Mayor Breea Clark asked the three co-founders of the company whether they prefer to purchase the property or lease it for long term. As it is, the city councilors are leaning on a long term lease but is also considering outright purchase provided the purchase agreement includes a buy-back clause. The clause will give Oklahoma City priority to buy the property before entertaining offers of other buyers, if and when the art company decides to sell the Norman City property.

Factory Obscura co-founder Laurant Massenat said that while they prefer a purchase deal, they are not discounting the possibility of agreeing to a long term lease.

Some Concerns Raised by the OK City Council

Some OK City Councilors asked about Factory Obscura’s business model and of its goals in relation to its expansion in Norman. Lee Hall, OK City’s Ward 4 councilor, specifically voiced concerns raised by local artists —- that the art company would compete with Norman City’s struggling artists in vying for opportunities and in applying for grant money.

Co-founder Kelsey Karper explained that the interactive art gallery intends to temporarily exhibit immersive and interactive collectibles for profit but with a goal to share a portion of the company’s profits to Norman City’s non-profit art community.

Keppler added that their mission is to make the pie larger for all artists by creating new opportunities and providing additional resources; adding that their goal will be the same for Norman City.

Co-founder Laura Phillips also gave assurance that Factory Obscura will not compete in vying for art grants and that they also intend to hire Norman City residents.

Last week, Japanese electronics company TDK announced through a letter that they will be closing their Shawnee site located at 5900 N. Harrison, on March 2022. The TDK Ferrites Corporation which currently employs 157 Shawnee residents and founded in 1987, will move its Shawnee operations out of the country in connection with the company’s global restructuring.

A Brief Background on TDK and Ferrite

TDK was the very first company to commercialize ferrite in 1935. after Dr. Takeshi Takei and Dr. Yogoro Kato, of the Tokyo Institute of Technology’s Department of Electrochemistry, invented industrial methods of using and producing electrical products made from ferrites.

Shawnee Forward Inc Announces Grant for Small Businesses in Pottawatomie County

Recently, Shawnee Forward Inc announced that a CARES Act fund worth $155,000 is now available as financial grants to small businesses in Pottawatomie County.

Applicant Criteria and Business Eligibility Requirements

Those deemed eligible for the grant are business owners who generated no more than $2 million in gross revenue in 2019, while employing not less than 50 full time workers or their equivalent during the same period. The program will award $5,000 as financial relief in line with the CARES Act released by Congress in response to the setbacks caused by the nationwide pandemic lockdown. Deadline for submission of application is set on Dec. 23, 2020.

As the grant program is administered by Shawnee Forward Inc. along with Pottawatomie County Commissioners, as well as officials from the cities of Tecumseh and Shawnee, a task force of members have been created to review all applications. A set of guidelines have been published in the Shawnee Forward Inc. website detailing the applicant criteria and eligibility requirements.

Oklahoma Public School Districts Reporting Cases of COVID-19 Infections

This month in Oklahoma, more than 250 public school districts have sent in reports about having students and staff members who have tested COVID-19 positive. The BLM protests joined in by hundreds of Oklahoma City residents ended when agitators instigated rioting and looting acts. T. Sheri Dickerson, the leader of the Oklahoma City chapter of BLM, said they proceeded to downtown Oklahoma City Sunday night to ask community members to disperse peacefully and think of their own safety, as well as the safety of all other protesters.

“Project Homeland” – Shawnee’s Long Hoped for Infrastructure Project Finally Coming

“Project Homeland,” Shawnee’s infrastructure project that has taken decades of planning will soon be underway. Last month (October 2019), members of the Shawnee City Council unanimously agreed to all the details related to “Project Homeland,” of which the primary goal is to build an industrial park at the gateway intersection located at 43rd St. and Kansas Highway 7.

According to Ann Smith-Tate, who is the CEO of the Shawnee Chamber of Commerce and Economic Development Council, the project remained a high priority undertaking through several decades. Ms. Tate said that through the years, as many as five site plans and six studies demonstrate previous efforts devoted to a project that would see the building of a business park, or the development of a similar infrastructure on a Shawnee site.

Now that the plan has come into realization as “Project Homeland,” as much as $90 million in local economic development funds will be required. The local Shawnee government intends to raise the funds by issuing $250 million worth of private activity revenue bonds. After all, “Project Homeland” is more than just about developing a 182-acre site into an industrial park, comprised by a 2-million square foot facility and warehouse spaces for light manufacturing and distribution.

“Project Homeland’ includes conversion of the agricultural property into an industrial site; as well as undertakings for road works and installation of proper waste water connections; being precursors to the actual construction of the industrial park.

Once the industrial park is complete and operational, it is forecasted to yield as many as 2,000 fresh employment opportunities for Shawnee locals. Moreover, the industrial complex will become a source of new property taxes; making the city government less dependent on residential taxes being paid for by private property owners.

Entities that Will Carry Out the Development and Construction Aspects

The city will issue general obligation bonds and award economic development grants to finance the public infrastructure improvements.Three million ($3 million) will be allotted to the Johnson County Wastewater for the completion of the wastewater connections and improvements. The Kansas Department of Transportation will receive $6 million for the necessary road works.

The contract for the development and construction of the industrial park has been awarded to Blue Shawnee LLC, but under the condition that work must be rendered on the initial building by October 31, 2022 or as soon as wastewater improvements are underway; whichever of the two comes first. If Blue Shawnee fails to commence work on the first building, measuring at least 180,000 square feet during the earlier of the agreed periods, the Shawnee City government reserves the right to terminate Blue Shawnee LLC as designated building contractor.

Shawnee City Encourages Business Entrepreneurship Among Young People via “KidsFest Business Fair”

Shawnee City through the Shawnee Parks & Recreation is encouraging its young people to engage in business by holding a KidsFest Business Fair. Held last September 07, 2019,

Shawnee youths, at ages ranging between 6 and 16, promoted their business in booth spaces that cost them $10. Around 25 to 30 of Shawnee’s young entrepreneurs participated by displaying and selling crafts, as well as advertising and performing services.

According to Shawnee Park recreation coordinator for Youth and Special Events, Matt Mann, they wanted to provide ways by which the young people of Shawnee can avail of opportunities for themselves at an early age. Mann said the city also engaged adult entrepreneurs to provide support and tips that will further encourage their younger counterparts to grow their entreprise.

 

As part of the KidsFest Business Fair’s educational aspect, kids gained actual experience by presenting their business ideas. They also received advice on how to go about related business plans.

 

After all, the main goal of the kid’s business fair is to boost the confidence of Shawnee’s young people not only by acquiring valuable lessons but also in providing a venue in which they can start getting the feel of business even at their young ages.

Ten-year old Kinley Wohlgemuth and her 8-year sister Rylan, own and operate a business that they privately call “Shawnee Sisters,” which produces and sells various crafts. Their mom, Ashley Wohlgemuth, said the sisters are constantly crafting and are able to sell their creations; but stressed that those are all the girls are selling.

 

Rylan is in charge of baking and making beads, while Kinley creates scrunchies. They are also into baking goodies, like muffins and scones. The sisters started selling their crafts and fresh-baked goods at garage sales where they are allowed to display their products.

Shawnee’s Oldest Natural Art Gallery to Celebrate 100 Years of Bringing Art and Culture

Shawnee’s oldest natural art gallery, the Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art (MGMoA), is poised to mark its 100th year. The museum actually started out in the 1900s as a collection of artefacts from ancient civilizations and medieval paintings in the studio of Father Gerrer, the then Benedictine monk at St.Benedict’s Church.

To mark its more than 100 years of bringing art and cultural education to the people of Oklahoma, the MGMoA will be holding an exhibit entitled “Journey Back in Time: The History of the Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art,” from July 13 to September 01, 2019; showing photographs of the museum and its collections during Father Gerrer’s time,

History of the MGMoA

Delaynna Trim, the current Curator of Collections at MGMoA narrates the story of how the museum first started. Based on stories told over the years, Father Gregory Gerrer started collecting artefacts and paintings while in Europe, training to become an artist. It is said that the European museums had inspired the Benedictine monk to collect magnificent paintings, ethnographic objects, and wood and seashell samples collected from a variety of cultures across the world. That way, he could bring the world to the people of Oklahoma by way of a local museum in Shawnee.

Although the collection brought home by Father Gerrer started small, it eventually grew through his travels and the people he met. He was said to have told them of his dream of bringing culture and art to Oklahoma. In turn, they gave him their valuable pieces of art and artifacts to help him fulfill that dream. One such artefact is the Egyptian mummy exhibited by the Glen Island Museum of Buffalo, New York, which he brought to Shawnee in 1921.

Ms. Trim said that by 1919, Father Gerrer’s collection had outgrown his studio, making it necessary to display the objects at the newly built Benedictine Hall of the St. Gregory campus. The hallway came to be known as the Gerrer Museum, where pieces of medieval and Renaissance artworks hung, while the artefacts were housed on the second floor.

The museum organized by Father Gerrer was described as encyclopedic, with its exhibits of taxidermied animals, Renaissance artworks, weapons collected from different parts of the world, and displays of woods and seashells as artefacts of natural history. Yet unlike other museums, the collection of the Gerrer Museum never belonged to any affluent individual.

Gerrer Museum Becomes the Mabee Gerrer Museum of Art

Father Gerrer passed away in 1946. Left without a director, the museum was temporarily closed. In 1957, Stephen Gyermek was hired as the new museum director and was tasked to oversee the renovation of the museum, as well as create programs for children and adults. However, St. Gregory’s High School and College had also grown and needed to use the rooms occupied by the museum. A new but temporary home for the gallery was found at the Kirkpatrick Science and Arts Foundation, until such time that a new building could be erected.

In 1977, the J. E. and L. E. Mabee Foundation in Tulsa, Oklahoma, agreed to sponsor the construction of a new building in which to house the Gerrer Museum collection. The Mabee Foundation is a non-profit establishment founded by John E. Mabee and his wife Lottie for the purpose of giving aid to religious Christian organizations, charitable institutions, hospitals, institutions of higher learning and the likes.

In April 7, 1979, the Gerrer Museum reopened in its new building as the Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art.

The Egyptian Mummy at Shawnee’s Mabee-Gerrer Museum

An Egyptian mummy known as Tu Tu is one of the major tourists attractions of Shawnee, Oklahoma.

 

On display at the The Mabee-Gerrer Museum, Tu Tu was originally in exhibit at the Glen Island Museum of Buffalo, NY, until Benedictine monk named Father Gregory Gerrer, bought the Egyptian artefact in 1921. Tu Tu, the mummy, was said to have been brought to America from Egypt by a certain Louis Bennett some time prior to 1898.

The Mabee-Gerrer Museum is one of the oldest natural art galleries in Shawnee, Oklahoma, which Father Gerrer founded in 1914 out of his desire to bring culture to the state. Acquisition of the Tu Tu Egyptian mummy must have brought not only culture, but also visitors and travelers coming from far and wide.

Researchers Tried to Unravel the Egyptian Mummy’s Background

 

Subsequent studies on the mummified remains of TuTu revealed that they belonged to a woman. There are indications that she had given birth to at least one child. Based on estimates of researchers, Tu Tu is about 2,400 years-old and believed to have died between age 40 and 50.

 

Sometime in 2015, an expert on mummy studies focused on the method by which TuTu’s body was processed. Jonathan Elias, PhD of the Akhmim Mummy Studies Consortium had identified certain social markers that gave indications of Tu Tu’s possible origins and stature.

 

Dr. Elias noticed a thickening around the neck of the mask, suggestive of an amulet or a small necklace hanging in that area. It was a common element found in Egyptian masks belonging to someone who lived in the Fayum district of Egypt during the Ptolemaic era.

 

Her cartonnage was loosely woven, while her hands were placed down along her sides; indicating that she was not a member of Egyptian aristocracy. Yet, her cartonnage was of high quality, which only suggests that TuTu held an important position in society.
