Shawnee Forging Ahead with Steateries and Parklet Comp Plans
Shawnee City is currently carrying on with the Comprehensive Plan for economic improvements, more so now that social distancing still has to be observed. At the forefront of the Comp Plans are the so-called “streateries” that allow serving food outside of establishments.
However, some commissioners are opposing the approval of allowing customers to park on Main Street, and on spaces near the “streateries.” Nevertheless, Shawnee City Commissioners Ben Salter and BoB Weaver for Ward 6 and Ward 2, respectively, against actions that would bar parking on Main Street based on contention that doing so will cause potential obstructions.
Streateries are Part of Shawnee Comp Plan Goals Passed in 2019
According to Shawnee City Planner Rebecca Blaine, the streateries’ guidelines are included in Shawnee’s Parklet Resolution of 2018. The resolution is in line with city commissioners’ push for plans that aim to encourage people to frequent the city’s downtown district.
The Parklet was built last late October and is located in two parking spaces situated in 9 E. Main St. Its building is in line and in accordance with the Comprehensive Plan, which took effect in October 2019. The Comp Plan intends to steer the city’s development and growth in the next two decades.
Outdoor dining has been the trend ever since the pandemic began, and streateries are the right solutions in allowing restaurants and the like, to continue serving their patrons. Ms. Blaine mentioned that the availability of the parklets and Main St. Parking will encourage people to experience outdoor dining.
The guidelines included in the city’s Comprehensive Plan allows the establishment of flexibility as long as they follow the five-foot wide parking space requirement of the federal Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
